John Lewis schooling fools on DOMA…in 1996.

Prophetic.

My hero.
For this and so many reasons.

"Whites who are sincere don’t accomplish anything by joining Negro organizations and making them integrated. Whites who are sincere should organize among themselves and figure out some strategy to break down prejudice that exists in white communities. This is where they can function more intelligently and more effectively, in the white community itself, and this has never been done."

While I usually tear up for these Story Corps podcasts, this one really got to me. It tells the story of Tracy Johnson, whose wife was killed in Afghanistan. And it’s so appropriate for the news this week that same sex spouses of military service members will receive the same benefits as heterosexual couples.

I can tell it meant a great deal to Tracy that she was able to be at Dover and be a part of the funeral, but the bitterness of the unnecessary steps she had to take for this to happen are just beneath the surface. I hope the extension of benefits to same sex couples is retro-active so Ms. Johnson will be recognized as the beneficiary of her wife.

A Retired Athlete Said The Smartest Thing About Television And Race The Other Day

Hey, so it turns out NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul Jabbar watches HBO’s oft-criticized show “Girls.” Here’s his forward-thinking point about race and casting in television. Be sure to read his whole article (at the source) because it’s a fantastic read.

I’ll reblog this agreeing with the sentiment. It is irrational to criticize Girls for its lack of diversity if the community which it represents isn’t authentically diverse. We should, however, discuss the continued de facto segregation in our society. That is the real controversy.

White people have to give up racism

“It’s not the job of people of color to win over racism, it’s the responsibility of white people to abandon it…”

Every person should read this column.

"I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married."

Shep Smith’s Reaction to Obama Was Not Your Typical Fox News

The fortuitous timing of President Obama’s announcement on same sex marriage meant that it came during Shepard Smith’s show on Fox News, giving him the first incredible reaction on the network. Shep played the clip of Obama’s statement that was aired on ABC, then declared: ”the President of the United States, now in the 21st century.” Then while discussing the clip with reporter Brett Bair asked if the GOP could campaign on the issue ”while sitting very firmly, without much question, on the wrong side of history on it.”

President Obama supports same-sex marriage

This is President Obama’s Kennedy moment. On June 11, 1963, President Kennedy gave a speech declaring his support of Civil Rights. This was symbolic for the movement and for the country. It did not mean Kennedy did not have more controversial decisions to make regarding Civil Rights, he famously opposed the March on Washington and reluctantly agreed when the organizers gave his administration permission to approve the program. (Congressman John Lewis, I’m sure, remembers this well.)

I know President Obama does not support a national law supporting gay marriage, or even an anti discrimination bill, but the symbolism of a president supporting this issue, at great political risk this election year, is a historic moment

Racism: A Complete Guide to 'Hipster Racism'(via @Jezebel)

There’s been a lot of talk these last couple of weeks about “hipster racism” or “ironic racism”—or, as I like to call it, racism. It’s, you know, introducing your black friend as “my black friend”—as a joke!!!—to show everybody how totally not preoccupied you are with your black…
